MORABA - Suborbital Space Flight with Research Rockets and Balloons

Organisation & Structure

MORABA’s team is organised in various teams which each address different fields of high altitude research missions. However, there are no fixed boundaries as they all work together within a programme or project, providing the complete set of resources to the scientific mission.

The Mobile Infrastructure group conceptualises, maintains and operates ground control with radar, telemetry and telecommand systems. It is also responsible for the design, engineering, set-up and testing of data transfer systems for sounding rockets and balloons.

The Electronic Flight Systems group develops and supervises the service module for rockets - the electronic command centre. It contains the interfaces to the experiments, recovery system, GPS, ignition units, and the rate control system (RCS) and attitude control system (ACS).

The Launch Services group – as the name suggests – deals with all aspects of the launch and flight supervision.

The Mechanical Flight Systems group plays a major role in the definition, construction and engineering of sounding rockets and balloons: their tasks are the design, building, testing and final inspection of mechanical systems, taking into account modern manufacturing techniques, project requirements and specific quality standards. They provide technical system support to the mission’s hardware during launch campaigns.

MORABA currently employs around 40 people:

Technicians of electronical and mechanical trades work together with engineers in the fields of aerospace, electrical and information technology engineering. MORABA addresses the areas of general rocket technology, trajectory calculations, attitude and rate control systems, telemetry systems and electronical subsystems for rockets. In addition, there are work experience students and graduate students who make a foray into the practical world of space research and applications within the scope of their studies.
